We are coming to the end of an extended 11 week term, concluding the semester with Activities Week. I wish to express my thanks to all members of our community for the great sense of belonging and partnership that I have experienced across my first six months at 海角大神. More specifically:

• Thank you to the many students who鈥檝e welcomed my intrusion into their conversations, providing many insights to their experience at 海角大神 and why they value our College (along with some 鈥榓dvice鈥� for enhancing our college).
• Thank you to our wonderful staff who so openly value positive relationships as the key to building our community. This is exemplified in their daily interactions with students, colleagues and families, and particularly in the incredible range of co-curricular opportunities, along with the amazing range of opportunities staff have prepared for Activities Week.
• Thank you to the many families who I鈥檝e encountered at the drop-off zone, information nights, music evenings, in Cafe N9ne and elsewhere. As a College we appreciate our positive partnership in learning and the care of your children. Personally, I thank each of you who has made the time to introduce yourself or even just wave and smile from your car.
• Finally, I am grateful to the many people and organisations in our wider community who enrich student (& staff) learning and the wellbeing of our students both within and outside our college.

I wish all students, staff and families a refreshing holiday break from 29 June (stay warm & well!).

Student Leadership Forum

A few weeks ago, I was invited to a Student Leadership Forum that was completely prepared and led by 海角大神 students for our 海角大神 Year 7 - 12 student leaders. While staff leaders were in attendance, we, too, were led by our College captains and assigned to student groups for discussions and activities. We certainly have a number of budding leadership consultants among our leaders, as they impressively covered leadership skills, clear communication, and future directions for the College among their engaging sessions. Congratulations to all involved in a great afternoon of student voice, agency and collegiality.

Two 海角大神 nominees for Australia's Best Teacher!

We know that 海角大神 is blessed with many wonderful teachers and thank the many students and parents who nominated a range of staff for the Australia鈥檚 Best Teacher awards. Congratulations to Kelly 鈥楥oach鈥� Breazeale and Peter Shim who were in the Herald Sun among only 14 Victorian educators listed in the Top 50!

The Subject Selection process will begin immediately as term 3 commences. The Subject Selection Web (SSW) will be available from 17 July and all students from Years 8-11 will receive an in class presentation on July 18. 

Our Subject Selection Expo will run on August 15 where students and families will have the opportunity to discuss with teachers their choices for 2025.

The more time students and families allocate to making good choices at this stage the more likely a meaningful course of study will be selected.

How is Artificial Intelligence (AI) a potential problem for your child?

The first point I wish to make is that AI can be a great resource to use, only when we fully understand the role we wish to allow it to play in our learning. Today, I will not present to you the obvious challenges that AI can bring to learning, but rather focus on some child safety concerns that have emerged in our society. If you have read the newspapers or watched the news in the last couple of weeks, it is likely that you have come across the unfortunate incidents that have taken place at different schools with regards to impersonations of people for the purpose of bullying and harassment. Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies have advanced quite rapidly, bringing numerous benefits across various fields, proving to be a toolset or resource that when used well, provides the scope for people to use it for functional purposes. However, the misuse of AI, particularly in impersonating individuals, has raised significant ethical and safety concerns for many people, and this is exemplified in the terrible experiences of many victims who are minors and whose dignities have been violated. One of the most troubling uses of AI is its potential for facilitating and exacerbating bullying and harassment.

AI impersonation can have severe psychological effects on the victims. When AI is used to mimic someone鈥檚 voice, writing style, or appearance, it can create realistic and believable fake messages, posts, or videos. The victim鈥檚 dignity is violated and they are left to feel helpless, often with increased anxiety, depression, and a sense of isolation鈥�. AI-driven impersonation can erode trust in relationships and trust in general. Many of the girls impersonated by their male peers with use of pornographic imaging have been left to deal with the terrible consequences, and undoubtedly, trust has been violated. The fake images, videos, messages and/or content created by AI can spread quickly on social media, causing significant reputational harm. This is particularly damaging for young people, particularly when they engage in social media frequently. A single fake post or video can tarnish someone's reputation, leading to long-term social and academic consequences.

Unfortunately, AI tools can make it easier for bullies to create and disseminate harmful content. Advanced algorithms can generate convincing deep fakes or chatbot interactions that harass or intimidate victims around the clock. This constant barrage can intensify the effects of cyberbullying, making it more difficult for victims to escape the abuse. The key problem is that young people are likely to have their devices with them most of the time, meaning that they cannot escape the bullies or the consequences that the impersonations can create.

The use of AI for impersonation raises significant legal and ethical issues. Laws governing digital impersonation and cyberbullying are still evolving and may not be equipped to handle the complexities introduced by AI. Please refer to the for further advice. The legal grey area can leave victims with little recourse and embolden bullies who exploit these technologies.

What can parents do?

Addressing the dangers of AI impersonation for bullying requires a multi-faceted approach from schools in support of parents. Educating students, parents, and teachers about the risks of AI impersonation and how to recognise it can help mitigate its impact.

As parents, it is essential that you communicate with your child about the dangers involved when impersonating someone else or when someone impersonates you. It is important that young people trust that their parents and school staff will support them in addressing the consequences for the actions that the act of AI impersonation can have. Please have regular discussions with your child and visit the eSafety Commissioner for support.

Providing robust support systems for victims of cyberbullying, including counselling and legal assistance, is crucial. At 海角大神, we offer support through the designated Pastoral Team Leaders, the YFC and through referral to external support such as the Victoria Police Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT), the eSafety Commissioner or the Orange Door.

As mentioned earlier, whilst AI holds immense potential for positive use, its abuse and misuse for impersonation and bullying poses serious dangers (apart from the other obvious issues for education such as completion of original work, misinterpretation of facts, etc, which I will discuss at a later stage). By understanding these risks and implementing comprehensive prevention and intervention strategies, you can better protect your child, and as a community, we can protect and support our students, from the harmful effects that AI-driven bullying can bring.

Last week, I outlined the issues that many young people have with mobile phone addiction. This is often demonstrated in the choices that some students make when spending time in the toilets, or in out of bounds areas, just so that they can access their devices. Mobile device use, just like AI, can be wonderful instruments to access and use as resources, so that individuals can function in society. However, they lack the cultural awareness and critical literacy skills that appropriately functioning contributing members of society are required to have. It is for these reasons that I encourage you to assist your child with the necessary tools to navigate through the challenges that AI and technology bring, so that the challenges become the opportunities for their growth as functional, cultural and analytical human beings.

Spiritually Speaking - The busyness of life.

This Sunday鈥檚 reading sees the disciples rejoin Jesus after a period of time preaching and teaching. They have lots to tell him about everything they have been doing. It had been so busy that Jesus suggested they go and find a deserted place so that they can rest. I am sure this logic is something we can all relate to. Needing time away from crowds, a quiet place to reflect, unwind and de-stress. From the young mother with toddlers who dreams of being able to go to the toilet in peace to the student with three major assessments due - we all need to take a break.

The Christian practice of 鈥渞etreat鈥� is one that we do with many year levels at 海角大神. At the end of last term both our Yr 7 and our Yr 12鈥檚 experienced forms of retreat. It is a time for our students to leave their regular daily activities and focus on time for themselves, for reflection, and to reconnect with God. Students can challenge themselves, try new things and express gratitude for others.

How do you get to retreat?

By the end of the reading we discover that the crowds find Jesus and instead of shooing them away he shows compassion. He sits down and begins to teach, for he realises that these people are retreating to him; to find solace and meaning in their daily lives. To stop and quietly sit in the presence of God, can be the moment of retreat that rejuvenates the soul.

Activities week across the school provides a unique opportunity for students to continue learning in different environments. This article shares an overview of the week for senior years students.

Year 10's Future's Week is purposefully positioned within the Year 10 program. The week sits between the recent Thursday THRIVE sessions, which have focused on careers and pathways, and subject selection discussions for 2025. In the THRIVE sessions, students have used the Career Voyage software to explore career plans that connect to their strengths and interests and understand what different qualifications lead towards. 

Future's Week, is a meaningful program designed to extend the preparatory work of the Career Voyager to further upskill students in making decisions about their futures. It focuses on careers and pathways, includes career presentations by friends and family of the school, discussions on finances, banking, and tax, and culminates with tours of chosen universities and TAFEs. Scattered throughout the week, students will participate in preventive health sessions led by Choicez Media, Melbourne Museum, and Toolbox, focusing on managing healthy relationships, overcoming procrastination and the dangers of just one punch, and road safety. 

Year 11 activities are all about adventure, exploration and social connections. Students have the option to choose between two exciting camps. Either travel to the Northern Territory, where they'll experience the beauty of Kakadu and the stunning sunsets of Uluru, walk through magnificent landscapes, sleep under the stars and swim in magnificent hot springs. Or staying more locally at City Camp, a highly active camp that involves day trips rock climbing and to the Werribee Zoo, plus a two-night stay in the city鈥攙isiting a combination of day and evening attractions, making for a truly memorable experience. 

Year 12 students are involved in an eventful week directed towards academic skills and social connections . Beginning with Success Integrated, building on their program of study skills and a practice English exam. Year 12 students will also attend a tertiary institution of their choice. Students can specifically explore learning institutions they may potentially apply to for courses via Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) from July 29 onwards this year. Each session will include a campus tour, specific information about courses and student life on campus. The week will conclude with Retreat. A significant event for the senior students, as it is the final extended camp together as a cohort.

The College is deeply grateful to the families and friends of the College who volunteered their time to present to the Year 10鈥檚 next week. We wish the year 11 Kakadu trips safe travels and plenty of good weather as they leave this weekend.

Middle Years Report

Loyalty is a trait that is highly valued in teens. In Year 8 Health when we get students to 鈥榖uild a wall鈥� with the most important characteristics of a healthy relationship, loyalty is inevitably placed at the bottom of the structure as it is seen as the foundation. And just speaking to a few Collingwood supporters in my class about ex-Magpie players Jack Ginnivan, Taylor Adams, and Ollie Henry who left their beloved club, and the disdain they seemingly now hold for them also hit home to me that loyalty is a highly valued character strength in our teenagers!

We recently celebrated the Student of the Month for May where the theme was loyalty. Loyalty is important for all of us as it fosters a sense of trust, stability, and belonging however even more so for teenagers during such a pivotal stage of their development. It helps them build strong, supportive relationships with peers, family, coaches, teachers, and community leaders, which are essential for emotional and social growth. Loyalty teaches teens the value of commitment and integrity, shaping their moral compass and hopefully guiding them in making responsible and wise decisions. At a time when social pressures and uncertainties can be high, having loyal connections can provide a safe place and boost their confidence and resilience. Something that all parents desire their children to have.

As we wrap up this term, I'm excited to share the fantastic outcome of our Winter Appeal for St. Vinnies. Together, we've made a significant impact in supporting our community, thanks to your incredible generosity and dedication.

Throughout the appeal, we focused on various initiatives aimed at providing essential support during the winter season. We collected an impressive 2,186 items, including non-perishable food and toiletries. These donations will help ensure that individuals and families facing hardship have access to both nourishing food and basic necessities during these colder months.

A special thank you to our Year 7 students for their outstanding effort in bringing in over 700 items鈥攁 fantastic achievement that truly embodies our school spirit of compassion and generosity.

Our bake sale was a great success, raising $475. This money will directly fund St. Vinnies' programs and services, helping to provide crucial support to those in need within our community. Additionally, our recycling drive, where we collected cans and bottles for refunds, contributed approximately $60 to our fundraising efforts.

Thank you to the many students who helped throughout the term - collecting, counting, and boxing all the donations, as well as those who volunteered their time to bake and sell items for our bake sale. Your hard work and dedication behind the scenes ensured that everything ran smoothly and efficiently.

One of the most impactful parts of our Winter Appeal was the winter sleepout experience. This event not only raised awareness about homelessness but also brought in an additional $708. This amount will make a real difference in providing shelter and support to those who need it most.

A big thank you to the students and staff who took part in the sleepout. Your willingness to endure a night of discomfort to raise awareness and funds for those in need is truly inspiring. Thank you for your courage and compassion in making a difference through your actions.

Before we head off into the holidays, I want to express my sincere gratitude to each and every one of you who contributed in any way. Your kindness and generosity have demonstrated the strength of our school community when we come together for a common cause.

As we enjoy our well-deserved break, whether relaxing at home, travelling, or spending time with loved ones, let's carry the spirit of compassion and community with us.

Music Camp

Term 3 starts with one of our favourite events in the music department: the three-day Music Camp at the Phillip Island Adventure Resort. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to mix across year levels and bond as a group. The days are spent alternatively rehearsing music in core ensembles and partaking in adventure activities, such as the flying fox and laser strike. The evenings are spent relaxing with a trivia night, a movie, and small performances.
Rehearsals concentrate on the upcoming Victorian Schools Music Festival and South Street Ballarat Eisteddfod, as well as the end of year Showcases. The Camp also allows us to rehearse together as an entire group for a combined piece to be performed at the Showcases. Students find the Camp valuable for their musical education, inspiring, and lots of fun!


Music Progression Rubrics

In 2024, the College participated in the Council of International School accreditation process. As part of the CIS program a selection of music staff decided to focus on 鈥淗igh Expectations鈥�, and improve its practices regarding feedback for the benefit of student progression. As part of this project the team has evaluated assessment tools from across Australia and Internationally and developed its own student progression rubrics. These rubrics are aimed to be beneficial for students, teachers and families by giving students a clear understanding of the current level of ability, in addition to giving guidance of how to move forward in their instrumental development and ability. These rubrics are also beneficial for collaboration amongst staff, in addition to providing targeted feedback to families about areas for the students to focus and improve.

These rubrics will show up now on SIMON as a 鈥淩eporting Assessment Tasks - (Instrument Name) Student Progression Rubric鈥�. These are aimed to be snapshots of a student鈥檚 potential progress from beginners to advanced, and not year-level based. If a student is a beginner in Year 7 they would be suitably marked at a Level 1: however if they have had 3 - 4 years experience they may be situated higher on the Levels, even as a Year 7. The same would apply for a beginner in Year 9.

Year 12s now have about five months left of high school, so reflecting back on the last five years of our time at 海角大神 we appreciate the variety of activities we鈥檝e been able to participate in, especially at the end of a long term with exams and assessments. Next week we get to refresh ourselves on our retreat in Phillip Island. It will be a chance for us to take a break from our studies, while making the most of the little time we have left together as a cohort.

This time last year, many of our year level were in the Northern Territory or Melbourne City, and the current Year 11s will soon have the privilege to see some of Australia鈥檚 most amazing sights. Enjoy the warmth of Darwin while we remain shivering in Melbourne, but don鈥檛 forget to wear sunscreen!

The Year 10 students will be indulging in a range of experiences relating to career pathways before entering VCE. This includes a university visit, to get a feel for life after high school, as well as the opportunity to hear from people in a range of occupations. It鈥檚 an exciting time to begin thinking about career pathways, as there are endless possibilities to explore.

In step with the core value of perseverance, Year 9 students will be engaging in a range of activities to push their boundaries. This includes the My Melbourne and My Vic excursions, learning about the ongoing issues around us in society, and how we can persevere to solve these problems. We hope these activities are enjoyable while being hard work, as they have formed some of our best memories!

Year 8s will be beginning Global Green projects, focusing on our core value of stewardship. Unfortunately we missed out on the experience due to Covid lockdowns, but it is a valuable and fun project. Global Green provides the chance to work with new students, learn about struggles faced in countries around the world, and practise creating sustainable solutions.

For their first time, the Year 7s will participate in their Connect week, which involves excursions such as visiting the museum, and going on their Patron Saint pilgrimage. This poses as a chance for students to build on their skills of belonging with one another, but also with our faith through developing a greater understanding of our Saints.

We wish you all the best with your activities week, and hope you are able to use the time to refine certain skills, while still having fun with friends. Stay warm over the holidays, and take it as an opportunity to have a break from study leading into the back end of the year.

The Secondary School Immunisation Program offers free National Immunisation Program schedule vaccines to all eligible Year 7 and Year 10 students. The Maroondah Council Immunisation Team will deliver immunisations to consented students onsite at 海角大神 College.

Your local council will work with 海角大神 College to implement the immunisation program.. The authorises secondary schools to provide their local council with student and parent/guardian contact information for any student scheduled to receive a vaccination. This information is only used to assist local councils to follow-up parents/guardians of students with incomplete or missing immunisation consent forms.

Every day vaccination saves lives and makes it possible for Victorians to live free from the illness and disability caused by many infectious diseases.

The school provides the following basic student and parent/guardian contact information to the local council immunisation service:

Why does the school provide this information?

• To improve communication with parents/guardians regarding their child鈥檚 vaccination needs.
• To ensure all eligible students are offered the opportunity to access free vaccinations at school.

What do you need to do?

A SPECIAL REPORT: Smokeless Tobacco Products

The evolving nicotine landscape requires parents and caregivers to stay informed to protect young people from these emerging threats. Snus and nicotine pouches are gaining popularity among young people as smokeless tobacco (SLT) products. Both products are discreetly placed under the upper lip, allowing nicotine absorption through the gums.

Health authorities are urging proactive measures to curb this growing trend and calling on regulators to implement controls before these products become as widespread as vapes. The high nicotine levels in these products pose serious health risks, including nicotine addiction, cardiovascular disease, gum disease, tooth decay, and even nicotine poisoning. Researchers highlight the detrimental effects of nicotine on developing brains, linking its use to depression, anxiety, ADHD symptoms, and an increased risk of addiction to other drugs.

The marketing of snus and nicotine pouches targets young audiences through social media influencers, raising concerns about their increasing popularity among school students. And like vapes, they come in various flavours and strengths, with unregulated nicotine levels leading to inconsistent and misleading labelling.  It is clear that SLT products contain not only nicotine, but also other chemicals with unknown long-term effects.

This Special Report will help you become aware of the potential risks of smokeless tobacco products and guide you in age-appropriate discussions with your child.

海角大神 College now has their own

Road to Zero is a world first road safety education complex and has been developed by the in partnership with the Melbourne Museum. Road to Zero uses TAC research, educational practice, and is co-created with teachers. As part of the Victorian Government鈥檚 strategy, it aims to reduce road trauma in pre-learner drivers by building knowledge and awareness that will empower young road users to make safe decisions.

The Road to Zero experience has two parts: the Road to Zero Experience Space - an immersive and exploratory gallery showcasing the latest interactive technologies, and curriculum-linked programs in Learning Studios.

Year 12 Health and Human Development students study Road Safety as a major topic in Unit 3. Melbourne Museum, the Victorian Government and the TAC joined together with the VCAA to design four 30-minute sessions directly related to the Key Knowledge from the study design that will be assessed in an upcoming SAC and the end-of-year exam. Each session had a different focus related to the theory being learnt but all were interactive and gave students hands-on, practical experience of how the Road to Zero strategy is designed and implemented. It was an immersive experience which will hopefully lead to greater understanding of this content.

VCE PE Unit 2 - Contemporary issues in Sport, Physical Activity and Society 

Guest Speaker - Eloise Chaston

In Year 11 VCE PE Unit 2 there has been a focus around Contemporary issues in Sport, Physical activity and Society. The unit explores a range of issues including those linked to gender equity, inclusion and diversity, athletes mental health and wellbeing, athletes physical health (concussion), impacts of social media, children's sport, violence in sport and sexualisation in sport. 

Quite a broad unit with plenty of scope for discussion and debate on a range of topics which is often guided by what is occurring at the time in the world of sport and physical activity.

Fortunately, former student (2019), Eloise Chaston, was kind enough to come in and speak to the classes about their experiences as an elite athlete (AFLW), and the different insights, challenges and achievements both personally and professionally. It was an insightful, sensitive and engaging presentation that provoked and challenged many thoughts and opinions in the students. 

Student Reflections: 

"I really enjoyed the talk and found their opinions very interesting. I liked their attitude to the talk as they were open and honest about what they came here to talk about. I didn't know as much as I thought I knew about the issues raised so it was cool to hear from a different inside perspective. The pay gap issue was really interesting as I didn't really take into account all the factors and barriers it is enabling and therefore with El I was able to understand more about the key issues around it."

鈥淚 think the issues El raised were very interesting and it definitely taught me a lot about the behind the scenes at clubs of AFLW and AFL and what issues actually happen. It taught me a lot about contemporary issues in sport and how it can actually affect the players and their mental health. I understood the seriousness of a lot of these issues and it was really interesting to hear it from a player themself of their personal experience. I took away to always be your truest self and push through for what you really love and deserve even when circumstances get hard.鈥�

鈥淭he talk we had with athlete, El Chaston, discussed many wider topics of contemporary issues in sport, which assisted us in a deeper understanding of the impacts and reality of modern day sport. I got lots out of their talk, but most of all the issues in terms of gender equity in sport, as El talked about their experience and hardships of how gender influences the sporting industry. They discussed what is currently being done and what still needs to be done for sustained improvement. Their talk was extremely inspiring on how they battle issues in sport and their ability to strive regardless鈥�

鈥淭he issues raised by El were quite prominent in regards to contemporary issues in sport. El touched on a few of the ways in which it affects peoples sporting careers and livelihoods. One important thing that I took away from El's session was the impact of contemporary issues on a person's lifestyle and how that also affects their income, etc. It was good to hear that through the AFL players association that any player can access a lifetime of resources for free or subsidised to promote the maintenance of mental health and wellbeing, along with physical health.鈥�

鈥淭he talk was really good. It was really cool to have an insight into the AFLW and how it is very much a business. One thing I took away was how much support the AFL gives in the way of mental health and how big the pay gap is. It was also important to remember that fair and equal are different and the women playing understand that everything won't be equal straight away they still have to work to get to the same level as the mens.鈥�

Turning E-Waste into Art: Recreating Famous Artworks with Discarded Computer Parts

In the age of technology, electronic waste (e-waste) is a growing concern. The IT department approached the Social Arts class for some possible artwork to enhance their white walls in their office. Old computers, broken keyboards, and other discarded electronic components often end up in landfills, contributing to environmental pollution. However, these discarded parts can find a new life through the power of art. By repurposing e-waste to recreate famous artworks, students worked in small groups to transform trash into treasure, making a powerful statement about sustainability and creativity.
Recreating famous artworks with discarded computer parts is a meaningful and engaging way to address the issue of e-waste. It transforms something often seen as useless into beautiful, thought-provoking art. By participating in this project, students not only showcased their artistic talents but also promoted sustainability and hopefully inspired others to think creatively about recycling when next visiting the IT office. Look out for the splash of colour now adorning the walls.

鈥淭his is our recreation of The Great Wave off Kanagawa. This is so our IT department can have a bit of colour in the workspace. This is a very sustainable piece of artwork as we reused parts of old computers. Creating this was a challenging process, as we had to spray paint many keys and other computer parts. We also had to get creative and find other alternatives than hot glue to stick the parts down, as it was not working. There were many new techniques we had to learn, but it let us use problem-solving aspects and it gave us freedom to get very creative. It was an enjoyable and different experience and I know me and my group would love to do it again.鈥� Chloe M.   

鈥淭his is our recreation of The Wheat Field (Art piece on the left) made by a well known artist named Van Gogh. This painting resembles 鈥渁 symbol of the eternal cycle of nature and the transience of life鈥�. We created this painting with different computer parts such as computer keys and wires spray painted with different colours, this was a really interesting but fun task to take part in and I'm proud of our finished product.鈥�

鈥�The Starry Night by Van Gough is a beautiful piece. We wanted to recreate it with our creative minds. As a team, we recreated the starry night using pieces of computer parts ranging from keyboards, keys, mice, cords and wiring. We also tried to incorporate scraps from the 3D printers. We faced many challenges throughout the process however we overcame them. There were moments when the pieces didn't quite fit, or the colours seemed off, but we persisted, driven by our shared vision.
The end result was a breath-taking mosaic that captured the essence of Van Gogh's masterpiece while adding a modern, tech-inspired twist. The swirling skies were rendered with intricate patterns of wires and cords, keyboards and keys were cleverly arranged to form the rolling hills, black cording to create the eye-catching cypress trees, their shapes and textures providing a unique look. When we finally stepped back to admire our work, we were filled with a sense of accomplishment and pride.鈥�  Zali B.

The students visited us periodically with updates on the project and to gather more e-waste for the artwork. They have put in excellent work recreating these famous art pieces out of the items we had discarded. I competed in Mortal Kombat against my other colleagues in the department to secure the art piece that would hang above my desk and couldn't be happier with the result.

 Recycled bottle top adjustable lamps

Year 9 students in Make and Create class designed adjustable lamps with recycled bottle tops. It was a rewarding project that combined creativity with environmental responsibility. Not only did the students end up with a functional and stylish adjustable lamp, but they also contributed to reducing waste and promoting sustainable practices. Each lamp was unique, reflecting the students personal style and creativity. The variety of colours and shapes available in bottle tops students collected allowed for endless design possibilities.

On Thursday the 6th of June our Year Nine Geography class spent the day completing fieldwork in the Dandenong Ranges. The purpose of this day was for students to assess how people's perceptions of, and connections to a place impacts the value which is placed on it. To start the day students visited the 1000 steps to take part in an education session from Parks Victoria which examined how the uses of the Dandenong Ranges has changed over the past century. Students then had the opportunity to conduct a visitor survey and examine the importance of this place. 

Afterwards they travelled to Belgrave where they embarked on Puffing Billy for a trip to the new education centre/museum at Lake Emerald. Here students had a chance to explore the museum, learn about the history of Puffing Billy and the impact this renowned tourist attraction has on the area.

Overall it was a fantastic experience for all students, and for many the first time riding Puffing Billy. But likely not the last.

Crafting Fish Sculptures from Recycled Materials: A Fun and Eco-Friendly Year 8 Art Project

Art class is always an exciting time for creativity and expression. This term we dived into a unique and environmentally conscious project. Making fish sculptures from recycled materials. This project not only allowed students to showcase their artistic skills but also helped in understanding the importance of recycling and keeping plastics and trash out of our waterways and oceans.

Creating art from recycled materials is not just about making something beautiful and creative, it's also a lesson in sustainability. By using materials that would otherwise be discarded, students helped to reduce waste and learned the importance of recycling. This project also encourages creativity, problem-solving, and innovative thinking. The students were inspired to look at everyday objects and the world around them with a more creative and conscientious eye.

Seeing the finished sculptures gave students a sense of accomplishment and pride. Each fish sculpture was unique, reflecting their individual creativity and effort. The joy of creating something from scratch and the positive feedback from peers and teachers made the project fulfilling.

On the evening of June 14th, our school hosted a Winter Sleepout event. We were privileged to have a guest speaker from St. Vinnies who shared stories that deepened our understanding of homelessness.

The main goal of the night was to raise funds and increase awareness of the challenges faced by the homeless. One thing that stood out most to me was learning about the growing issue of homelessness among older women and how some individuals become homeless as a last resort for safety reasons.

The event also featured a scavenger hunt, which was both engaging and enjoyable. It provided a chance to familiarise ourselves with the school's layout while participating in a meaningful cause.

Overall, the Winter Sleepout was an eye-opening experience that successfully raised awareness about homelessness in our community.

I would like to start by acknowledging and showing my appreciation to everyone who helped out in The Vinnies Sleepout 2024. Everybody who participated and organised the event, students and teachers alike, have done a truly great and selfless act.

The Winter Sleepout was both fun and educational. It was a novel way to establish connections to the community and the homeless.

On the night we participated in fun activities like watching a movie, playing games and a night time scavenger hunt where the prize was chocolate. Unfortunately I didn't win :(. We also indulged in an auction where we could bid for various items and I won the CUP NOODLES!!!

Overall it was an enriching experience to learn about the struggles homeless people go through and how they end up in their situation. I learnt that homelessness is so much worse than it appears to be and that we should try to help out in any way that we can; even if it's just donating an old shirt or pair of shoes. The sleepover made me feel proud that I had participated in something meaningful by raising money that would be used for helping the homeless. It was a unique experience that I will remember fondly.

The Winter Sleepout was a great experience to learn about what homeless people go through. We had fun doing the scavenger hunt and the movie was really interesting! The whole evening was a wonderful experience, I will definitely do it next year!

My favourite part of the night was dinner, as we had just been running around for the scavenger hunt and we tried to unscramble the letters as we ate. I enjoyed bidding for food, as my friends and I teamed up and helped another team buy the huge bag of Minties up for auction. We ate those and played card games for hours afterward. Despite being the only junior girl who stayed overnight, the two senior girls were happy to let me bunk in with them. I loved the overall experience of learning what others were going through, and I enjoyed getting to know many fellow students.

We are thrilled to announce the commencement of our preparation for the upcoming World Challenge Immersion to Borneo in November. To kickstart our training students embarked on their first walk at the picturesque Mt Lofty, guided by their teachers, Gloria Coverdale and John Watson.

The training walk was not just an opportunity to build physical endurance but also a chance for the students to bond and foster a sense of team spirit. John Watson, an experienced outdoor enthusiast, led the group with enthusiasm and expertise, ensuring that everyone was motivated and well-prepared for the challenges ahead.

Our team set off early in the morning, eager and energised. The trail at Mt Lofty, with its challenging inclines and stunning vistas, provided the perfect backdrop for this initial training session. Students learned the importance of pacing themselves, staying hydrated, and supporting each other through the tougher sections of the hike. The day was filled with moments of encouragement, laughter, and a growing sense of camaraderie among the participants.

This training walk is the first of many as we gear up for the adventure of a lifetime in Borneo. The World Challenge Immersion will not only test our students' physical capabilities but also immerse them in a rich cultural experience, fostering resilience, leadership, and a deeper understanding of global citizenship.
