海角大神

After a welcome return to in-person learning last week, we are all disappointed to find ourselves in another period of lockdown. It鈥檚 important to thank the students and staff for their efforts this week to ensure that we maintain high standards of compliance with the guidelines, especially in relation to the wearing of masks. The students seem to have taken the responsibility to protect themselves and their community seriously and I thank them for doing so. I鈥檇 like to encourage our students to try and maintain strong momentum now by staying engaged with their online learning. The easiest way to stay engaged is to attend each class, participate in your learning (don鈥檛 be a passenger!) and provide helpful feedback to your teacher and your peers. 

I appreciate that lockdowns impact our families unevenly and, in many cases, create a juggling act for parents/guardians that requires a superhuman effort. I pay my respects to your tireless efforts to keep your children focused on the schoolwork and enthusiastic about their learning. Please contact the team leader if there are concerns, or if we can be of assistance. Let鈥檚 pray that we have a speedy return to in-person learning.

We enter the season of parent/student/teacher interviews over the next few weeks and there are events for each year level with some in an online mode and others, hopefully, able to proceed in person at the College. There are a number of whole school events coming up and these have been included as advance notice of early closure times and student free days.

We await further advice from the VCAA on a rescheduled date for the General Achievement Test (GAT) which was to be held on Thursday 12th August.

Parent Student Teacher Interviews - VCE/VCAL Students

Parent Student Teacher Interviews are scheduled for Tuesday, 17th August (2pm-8pm) for students in VCE and VCAL only.  Please note that all students will finish school at 1.05pm to allow staff to be available for these interviews. In light of current Covid-19 visitor restrictions to the College these interviews will be conducted online. 

Subject Selection Expo

Interviews for Years 8, 9 and 10 will take the form of a Subject Selection Expo on Thursday 26th August (2pm to 8pm).  Please note that all students will finish school at 1.05pm to allow staff to be available for these interviews.  We are hoping that Covid-19 visitor restrictions may be relaxed by this date and parents/guardians will be able to attend the expo in person at the College.

Year 7 Parent Student Teacher Interviews

Year 7 Parents/Guardians will have the opportunity to meet with Homeroom Teachers on the evening of Thursday 26th August (2pm to 8pm).  We are hoping that these interviews will be able to be conducted in person at the College.

Year 7 2022 Information Night

The first Information Night for guardians of students joining 海角大神 for Year 7 in 2022 has been postponed until Monday 16th August in the hope that we may be able to conduct a face to face meeting. We are inviting families whose oldest child is commencing Year 7 and those new to 海角大神. Current families are welcome to attend if you seek a refresher about transition.

Staff Spirituality Day

Ongoing formation in our spirituality is a cornerstone of our staff development policy and on Friday, 27th August we are gathering as a staff to learn online with Dr Anna Rowlands, St Hilda Associate Professor of Catholic Social Thought & Practice in the Department of Theology and Religion at Durham University. Advance notice that this is a student free day.

Premier鈥檚 VCE Awards

Unfortunately for our award recipients the event that was planned to acknowledge their outstanding achievement in 2020 has had to be cancelled due to restrictions in relation to large gatherings. Congratulations to our award recipients, Jamie Hanrahan (Environmental Science) and Daniel Barber (Media) and their teachers, Mr Craig Cleeland and Mr Sam Higgs. Senior Play

Amidst tight restrictions, we were finally able to stage the senior play, Stories in the Dark, last week. It is a testament to our young people that despite multiple postponements due to lockdown, the actors were not discouraged and seized the opportunity to perform with enthusiasm and, I am sure, great relief. Thank you to those who supported this performance, especially teacher Ms Meredith Greenwood. 

Enrolments for 2023

This is the final reminder to 海角大神 families regarding enrolment in Year 7 in 2023. Applications close on August 20th and there are no guarantees that places will be available for applications received after this deadline. Families are also reminded to log in to the and indicate that they are seeking re-enrolment for current 海角大神 students and update any details that may have changed since last year. Can I please ask that you complete this process as soon as possible to assist in our planning for 2022.

海角大神 Advisory Council Seminar

Our College Advisory Council gathered on Tuesday evening for their annual seminar program with a focus around our next School Improvement Plan. The members of our Advisory Council were presented with the feedback from our CIS Accreditation visit earlier in the year and were then set the task of describing the type of school they would like 海角大神 to be in five years from now. There was a great feeling of optimism from the participants and a sense that we should celebrate being members of an excellent school and strive to make it even better. Staff and students will be provided the same opportunity later in the year.

Coming Up: Parent Nights

Later in August we have two evenings where families can seek feedback and participate in planning for the future of their children. While there has been an email about this to all families, I thought I would take a few moments to explain the reasons for the timing and the organisation of these two nights.

VCE Parent Information Night August 17th: 2pm-8pm online

VCE students will be six weeks into their second semester by this stage and it is an opportunity for students and families to reflect on what has happened so far this semester, and in Semester 1, ask questions about progress but most importantly develop a plan for the rest of the year. It allows teachers to make observations about what habits and skills should be continued and what still needs to be done. If families need to intervene to help students to improve, there is still time. The meetings are online because this was what parents overwhelmingly requested in our surveys in Semester 1, especially if families had multiple meetings.

Subject Selection Expo August 26th: 2pm-8pm in person

This evening has multiple purposes. For Year 7 parents it is a chance to check in with the Homeroom teacher and see what is going well, what might need attention and ask any questions. For students in Years 8,9 and 10 it is a chance to meet the Homeroom teacher or Mentor, ask about progress, subject selections and other possibilities. There will also be displays from every learning area and staff and students who are involved in subjects available to explain exactly what happens in the different learning areas in the College. There will be detailed seminars on VCAL, VET and Pathways and Careers as these may be new to many parents. There will be opportunities for questions and answer sessions. For parents who have specific questions there will be experienced staff to assist in the selection of subjects. We have made this in person because it is designed as a subject choice experience with significant opportunities for interacting and not only a meeting with teachers. We do have a provision to go online if circumstances require it.

Parent nights are part of the College鈥檚 communication process to ensure that students and their families know how they are going, what they are aiming for and how to get there.

Finding inspiration from our athletes 

There is no doubt that the Tokyo Olympic Games illustrate the power of the human spirit with great positivity. Despite the setbacks that have been experienced worldwide in the last 21 months, athletes from all around the planet have shown remarkable commitment to their sports and their nations. I can鈥檛 wait to also watch our Paralympians display their talents in the next week. Like in past Olympics, our country is doing well across most sports, leaving a legacy despite the small population we have when compared to many other nations also competing. We are well represented at the games and we consistently achieve remarkable results on the world stage. 

Finding inspiration from our Olympians and soon to participate Paralympians, is not difficult. I can only imagine how awesome it must feel when being selected to represent your country at such an event. Imagine the feelings they experience when selected to represent our nation at the Olympics and put their skills on display because they are considered to be the best we have on offer. What a great feeling that must be!

The effort, sacrifices and commitment that each athlete must make to their sport, themselves and their teams is testament to a love for the sport and the gifts of the athlete. For every person who participates in a final or even gets to enter a qualifying race or match, there are many who have to miss out. For every gold medal won in a sport, there are many disappointed athletes whose commitment and sacrifices becomes the motivation to continue preparing for the next opportunity for victory. 

Last week, the son of a friend of mine was drafted into the National Basketball Association in the United States. Josh Giddey was selected to play for the Oklahoma City Thunder, a relatively young team with much promise as it rebuilds itself to compete for a future championship in the NBA. Like most Olympians, Josh's achievement is a great example of his hard work, effort, faith and commitment. For those of you who follow basketball, you may know that Josh played for the Melbourne Tigers as a junior, but did not make any state teams until the under 18s and then 20s teams. A sudden growth spurt saw Josh, who in the space of a year, went from 6鈥�0鈥� to 6鈥�6鈥� and now stands at 6鈥�8鈥� as an 18 year old with much to offer into the future as a basketballer. 

Our society often looks at the examples of Giddey, who despite not making the Boomers team participating in Tokyo, has achieved a great goal; McKeown or Titmus who have dominated the pool; or our newest hero, Peter Bol, the 800 metre runner who lifted our nation, despite not winning a medal; for inspiration. The admiration for our athletes is symbolic of a nation devoted to sport. It is for this reason that we must find inspiration from our athletes to persevere and achieve our best, in whatever that is that we decide to pursue our best. 

In the last 24 hours, we have been asked to return to a lockdown. This request, now for the 6th time, is considered to be the best option available to us in safeguarding the State from the COVID-19 Pandemic. I think it is safe to say, we have lockdown fatigue amongst our immediate community, Melbourne and regional Victoria as we enter the unsettling and confronting challenges of another lockdown. Our students and staff members at the College are now experts in transitioning into and out of remote learning.

The value and strength of the human spirit is of great relevance when we again work together to make the most of the opportunities that present themselves while we return to remote learning and living in degrees of isolation. Just like the perseverance of the athletes that we follow, admire and look up to, we must consider how we can now push through the challenges. Looking after your wellbeing, taking care of your loved ones, exercising, relaxing, studying, reading for pleasure and staying connected are important strategies to maintain in the effort to persevere during the coming week.

There is no doubt that the next week may be tough for some. Please remember that everything difficult in life can only make us stronger when we come through at the other end of the struggle. Just like Peter Bol, who spent three years in a refugee camp on his way to representing Australia at the Olympics, we will all celebrate the return to normality as the health experts continue to find ways to address the pandemic. All we need is perseverance.

MacKillop and Dominic Feast Days

This Sunday鈥檚 mass we celebrate St Mary of the Cross MacKillop鈥檚 feast day. Being our only Australian saint, it makes sense that we focus on her this Sunday. However, for our 海角大神 Community it is also the celebration of St Dominic鈥檚 feast day, so we reflect on two of our patrons on this day.

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop was born in Melbourne and worked tirelessly for the poor in the areas of

education and general wellbeing. She, along with Fr Tenison Woods formed the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart order in Penola, South Australia. She is known as St Mary of the Cross because she always carried a cross on her person to help her to stay "Christ-centred" in all she did. Mary faced many challenges including a period of excommunication due to her outspokenness of an abusing priest. One of her most well known quotes is the motto for our MacKillop Team, 鈥淣ever see a need without doing something about it鈥�. 

St Dominic De Guzman, like many saints of his time, originated from a wealthy background. He studied theology for 6 years and joined the religious community. During the famine that hit Spain, he sold all his possessions including his study materials to feed the poor. It is also believed that on two different occasions he offered himself into slavery to the Moors to try and save others. St Dominic excelled in his studies and he spoke strongly of biblical truth in light of the many groups who were seen to be spreading false teachings. He formed the Dominican

order of Preachers whose focus was to teach the truth of the bible to the community. His intense focus on truth is the foundation of our Dominic Team motto 鈥淰eritas鈥� which is Latin for truth.

So this Sunday, may we all take a moment to reflect on our Patrons and pray that, with God鈥檚 guidance we can follow in their footsteps.

In the last edition of The Lighthouse I welcomed everyone back to the start of the term, unaware of the impending 鈥淟ockdown No. 5鈥�. Here we are on the other side, and now into "Lockdown No. 6".

Our staff and students are getting on with the majority of their school activities (albeit remotely) -  it's "business as usual鈥� in what we now know as "Covid normal". What wonderful skills in resilience our young people are developing, supported by our staff each step of the way.  Welcome to some more new staff to 海角大神 this term.

Introducing new staff to 海角大神 this term:

Ruby Parsons studied a Bachelor of Exercise and Health Science and Masters of Secondary Teaching. Prior to 海角大神, Ruby was working at John Paul College in Frankston. As an ex- 海角大神 student, Ruby is no stranger to the surroundings (and some of the staff) and values belonging to such a supportive community, but  this time, as a staff member.

David Malvaso studied a Bachelor of Science (statistics) at RMIT University and a Masters of teaching (Primary and Secondary) at Monash University. He is very well travelled, spending a great deal of time overseas after his studies. Some of his favourite places include: Vietnam, USA, Israel, Jordan and the UK where he was teaching in 2020 but came back to Australia due to Covid-19. When David returned he was Casual Relief Teaching across both primary and secondary school settings and has been working in 海角大神 Tutoring program. He enjoys watching all sports, marathon running and plays football for 海角大神 Old Collegians. David  is grateful to all of the staff and students who have been extremely welcoming, generous with their time and willing to help him out at every opportunity.

National Tree Planting Day. Congratulations to those dedicated 海角大神 students from years 7 to 12 and teachers who were involved in Schools National Tree Day.  It was great to see positive environmental action in the indigenous garden being undertaken. Students discovered a sense of achievement of adding to the biodiversity and reduction of carbon emissions at 海角大神 College. This supports the completion of the indigenous garden trail with the upcoming opening of this month. The indigenous garden trail will be used by students across a range of curriculum areas.

For interested students in the Environment and Sustainability group we will be meeting at the veggie patch on Friday鈥檚 at lunchtime.

Why is critical and creative thinking important to student success ?

For years now the global trend in employment has been shifting away from routine oriented work and a greater focus on flexible skills and problem solving.  The demand for people with the skills to solve problems, develop innovative solutions and the ability to identify alternative opportunities are listed amongst the top three skills employers seek in employees. Research has indicated that Problem Solving is ranked above Creativity and Leadership in the seven Employability Skill.

Technology subjects of Design & Technology, Food Studies, Systems Engineering and Digital Technology have been structured to foster this problem solving philosophy and help students develop the key skills they will need for the future.

Effective problem solving is developed when students learn how to apply critical and creative thinking to a situation. As students consider their subject selections for Years 9 and 10 in preparation of developing their VCE program, they should consider how the technology subjects can be used to develop problem solving skills. In addition to learning some practical life skills the students will actively engage in the design process. The design process uses a range of tools to let students understand how critical and creative thinking can be used to assist in solving problems and be transferred into everyday life. 

Critical thinking lets the students analyse a problem, breaking it down into its components and sub components. They learn to investigate the relationship between the parts of the problem and investigate how they relate to each other; using logic and rules that can help make more informed judgements on developing methods to categorise, sequence, compare, rank priorities and using a scale of importance in a very analytical format.

Creative thinking lets the students explore, experiment and use innovative approaches to develop their imagination, sometimes resulting in new ideas or judgements. Thus, taking a more holistic approach to breaking the problem up. Students are encouraged to ponder, sketch, visualise and explore the possible solutions that can often be experimental  or one of a kind in a response to a broader scope of evolving solutions.

Problem solving starts with critical thinking, analysing the problem using clearly defined rules and applying logic to the process. This process then shifts to creative thinking and students endeavour to imagine a solution. The teaching foundation behind all Technology subjects is the application of the Design Process. The four steps of the Design process develop students' understanding and application of the Critical and Creative thinking tools and prepare them for the evolving employment structure of the future.

It is so unfortunate that current government COVID-19 restrictions has meant that Cafe N9ne has not been open to the public. While family members of the Year 9 students have not been able to enjoy a fresh coffee, or a delicious cake, or sumptuous breakfast created by their children, the College has been doing all they can to ensure the students don't miss the Cafe N9ne skills and experience within the restrictions.

"Caf茅 N9ne was such a great experience, my group and I really enjoyed it. We have gained and improved with many skills, such as cooking, serving and socialising with other people. My favourite part of working in the caf茅 was cooking the food that we had to prepare for our customers. It was quite challenging as we only had a limited time and many people to serve at once. Unfortunately my group only got to do caf茅 for three days. The teachers helping us were really kind, and guided us really well. If we had any questions or concerns about doing things like working at the cashier for example they would give us a hand. I am so thankful for the teachers who made this possible, and hope to do something like this again in the future."

What鈥檚 been happening in Fashion @ 海角大神?

Fashion is offered at Years 9 and 10 as an elective and also VET fashion beginning at Years 10 or 11. 

In Year 9 fashion, students learn sewing and design basics and have recently created some eye catching shibori dyed cushion covers and PJ shorts sets. During lockdown we focused on ethical fashion, felt sculptures and students designed and made a recycled garment.

"My favourite part of fashion was the practicals. Where we actually got hands down and made cool things. I made a lot of things but my favourite was making the dress. The things I learnt were fashion illustration, sewing skills, hand stitching, and using a sewing machine. When we went into lockdown we made things out of the resources we had at home."

"Fashion was the highlight of my Semester 1 classes, I made friendships while learning plenty. It was always the period of the day I looked forwarded to seeing my friends and the progression in my work. The dinosaur shorts and 鈥榬ecycled鈥� clothing piece were my favourite fashion work last semester. There was plenty of creative flexibility and we had been given the ability to take control from colours to accessories to overall creative design."

Last semester, Year 10 fashion students developed their sewing skills and constructed bucket hats out of recycled fabric and also made cosy hoodies, which helped students prepare for the approaching winter months. During lockdown we focused on sustainability in the fashion industry and Indigenous fashion designers and trends.

"What I enjoyed most about 10 fashion was the freedom to create items, I would have never been able to make without this class. From not being able to sew to having the handy ability to create my own jumpers, pants, shorts, tops, scrunches and many more. I can tell you from now having these skills it is a life saver and is extremely convenient. Some of the tasks I completed through this semester subject were learning how to recycle clothes, how to reuse left over materials and creating a more sustainable environment within the fashion industry and obviously making and designing clothes. During lockdown we really focused on our design drawings of our garments and our creation of different ideas, that could be possibly combined together or taken out. Over all I would highly recommend this subject to all 海角大神 College students as it is super handy to have these skills and is also an extremely fun, creative and enjoyable subject."

VET fashion first year students have recently learned patternmaking and how to modify a pattern to fit and suit their design. They chose to modify either a basic skirt block or basic bodice block. Here are some pictures of their amazing final garments. 

"I enjoy the more related environment of VET, I find it to be my least stressful subject and to me, that's honestly really nice. I enjoy how hands-on VET fashion is. I've learnt further sewing techniques and pattern making. So far I've made a satin corset top, which in my opinion turned out really well.  During isolation, we predominantly did the theory work for our projects or worked on our digital folio."

VET fashion second year students have learned fabric construction methods including hand felting, crochet and weaving, creating a textile product for a client. Below are some pictures of their incredibly detailed final pieces. 

"What I enjoy about VET fashion is that we get to explore different aspects of the fashion industry and we have control to some extent over what we make and how we design. So far I have learnt a lot about design elements and how they relate to clothes and body shapes, as well as how to construct a simple garment. During isolation, I mainly focussed on the different research tasks that we had to complete where we looked at fabric and fibres as well as different fashion trends and art movements that have influenced and inspired our designs."

With the help of some video demonstrations the VCAL students were able to continue building their cooking skills during the latest lockdown. It was a great opportunity to learn how to make an authentic Thai Satay Sauce. One of the main ingredients in a satay sauce is peanut butter, which we are unable to use in our school kitchens to protect students who are allergic to peanuts. 

The students researched the eight main common food allergens. They learned about the symptoms, treatments for food allergies and how to modify recipes with these ingredients to cater for someone who might suffer from this condition. In our second week of learning we travelled from Thailand to Italy and with some feel good music from Dean Martin to set the mood. 

The students were set the task to cook some Classic Italian Meatballs. Meatballs are a great versatile dish that can be served in a variety of ways to keep the spice in life...especially when it can start to feel like groundhog day in lock down!

"I decided to spice things up a bit by making it into some sort of curry/stir fry with rice, capsicum and broccoli. To say the least my family really enjoyed it and even my little brother who is the pickiest eater I know ate all of his."

After many months of on again, off again; rehearsals and then lockdowns; reschedules and reimaginings, we were finally able to perform the senior play, Debra Oswald鈥檚 Stories in the Dark, last Thursday. To accommodate limited audience numbers and for the cast and crew to feel that all that work had been worth it, there were two shows. At both, the students performed and supported each other so well and the small crowd of family and friends were appreciative and seemed to enjoy our quirky play.

"Participating in the senior play was a LONG journey but that moment my heart started racing as I walked onto stage with the bright lights shining on me, I knew that journey was worth it. In fact, it鈥檚 a bit of a bittersweet feeling that we just had closing night. You get used to joking around with the other cast and crew members at rehearsals and rehearsing the same things over and over again to get it perfect. But there is nothing like having that opportunity to transform into a fictional world with fictional characters. We got to observe human behaviour from how people live in war torn countries and incorporate that by expressing unnatural qualities into our characters and that鈥檚 what made the experience so much more exciting. Overall, I have no regrets joining the play."

"Doing backstage work for the senior play was really fun and being able to watch the other students perform and helping them out with props and costumes was great. I can鈥檛 wait to hopefully do it again next year."

Children around the world are drawn to books, enticed by a mandate of discovery and literature鈥檚 transformative power. After aligning themselves with protagonists, readers are typically emboldened to empathise and share perspectives with one another.  

In this vein, during Book Week (16th - 20th August) students are invited to explore the ARC (海角大神 Resource Centre) catalogue. When returning borrowed books, they are invited to provide feedback on stories read together with what has transpired within their hearts and minds.

Participants will be rewarded with a ticket for our prize draw to be held at lunchtime on the 20 August (winners will receive canteen or book vouchers to the value of $30).

海角大神 College has been privileged to count in its numbers, a small cohort of international students who have been in Australia since February 2020 without travelling home to be with their families. Most of them have continued to live with and be supported by Australian families.  A few of these remarkably resilient and wonderful young people who embody what is means to be an 海角大神 Student, were asked how they are coping at school.

Kiki Jiang:  Kiki came to Australia in July 2019 and studied English at a school in Mount Martha.  She transferred to 海角大神 to commence the Year 11 and 12 program and has embraced the opportunities and learning that our College has to offer.  Kiki has an excellent work ethic, is independent minded and very well organized.  She loves to play tennis, exercises to keep fit and indulges her love of cooking on the weekend. A loyal friend, Kiki has learned the art of balancing her responsibilities with her pastimes.

"As a Year 12 student, I have had to be more self-disciplined as the workload is much heavier than last year. Good planning and self-management for the workload are extremely important as I go along. What's more, having an optimistic attitude towards study is also essential despite the stress that always accompanies me during this year.

What I have learned about myself: With the fluctuation of COVID and lockdown throughout my VCE years, I have learned how to be resilient in order to cope with different situations. During the first half of Year 12, I realized that I have had to understand my capability explicitly while developing my potential. Staying positive in every situation, being thankful for all opportunities and time spent with teachers as well as friends, and enjoying my life to the best whilst in Year 12."

Alice Hong: Alice loves to create and develop her artistic talents and is hoping to study Design at university. Alice sought out a place at 海角大神 College in Year 10, as she wanted a school that would support and encourage her literacy, while offering a choice of subjects and an excellent learning environment.  She is one of three students who created the bird bath in the indigenous garden near the Canteen. Alice also plays the piano. 

"I really enjoy my school life in 2021 in 海角大神 College. Even though we are sometimes under year 12 academic pressure, with the help from my lovely friends and wonderful teachers, I have more strength to overcome difficulties. I also enjoy the time studying Product Design as it鈥檚 something I am really passionate about now as well as in future."

Alice Mei:  Alice Mei has been a student at 海角大神 since Year 8 and lives her with her mother in Melbourne. An avid piano player, singer in the A Capella group, performer in the band and a regular participant in College musicals, Alice has made the most of both the learning and co-curricular opportunities at 海角大神 College.  She strives to do her best, has made some lasting friendships with her classmates and has a happy demeanour that brings a ray of sunshine to those around her.

"My best memory…I will never forget Year 9 Camp when we went kayaking and learnt lots of useful skills of living in the wild. The most fun I鈥檝e had is being the piano player of the College Band, as I experienced the magic of music. Every time I hear the orchestra ensemble, I am surprised that different instruments鈥� ensembles can make such beautiful harmony together! I have learnt a lot of music knowledge from other talented musicians while being a part of the College band."
