One Spirit (of the Olympics)

It鈥檚 almost impossible to miss that we are in the middle of the Olympics, particularly given the great start Australian athletes made in the first few days. One of the most enduring successes has been the women鈥檚 4x100m freestyle relay team, with last Sunday鈥檚 Gold medal the fourth Olympics in a row for this team. Importantly, it has been a different combination of women each time, highlighting the strength of culture and tradition in both the relay team and wider swimming team. Many will be aware of St Paul鈥檚 well known Letters to the Corinthians (in Greece, just like the Olympic origins), which contain the 鈥淥ne Body with Many Members鈥� extract (1 Cor. 12:12-31). Paul notes that while we each have different strengths, personality traits, etc, we are united in the one Body of Christ: one in the spirit.

Similarly, the success of each team lies in its diversity: the different strengths from those who start well, to those who carry the middle to those who finish strongly. At 海角大神, the longevity of our academic success and sense of belonging is testament to our enduring strength of our culture, faith and diversity. Each year, the exiting graduate cohort and incoming Year 7 students mean that 1/6 of our community changes every year. It is the great welcome from our staff - starting with next Monday鈥檚 Year 7 2025 information Evening - and the pride our students have in finding their place among the myriad of opportunities at 海角大神 that ensures our tradition remains a strong and positive one. As St Paul wrote, 鈥淚f one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honoured, all rejoice together with it鈥� (v.26).

High School Musical: The Musical - ONE WEEK TO GO!

With less than a week to opening night on Wednesday 7 August, we are all looking forward to the START OF SOMETHING NEW after our cast and crew have had their HEAD IN THE GAME over many months of hard work. There are still some , so book now to show our students that WE鈥橰E ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!.

Congratulations to our Year 8 students and staff who have braved very chilly & wet conditions on their camps at Trafalgar this past fortnight. I had the privilege of joining the MacKillop campers yesterday and they were certainly enjoying the more adventurous activities than previous camps.

Year 9 Awards: recognising Excellence and Perseverance

It was an honour to be at the Year 9 Awards Assembly on Thursday and to be able to present the awards for the Top 10 Students from Semester 1. The dedication and hard work of our students was not only recognised through the top ranked students in each subject, but also through those recognised as displaying outstanding effort and improvement. This latter category is one that all students can aspire to, through displaying the Year 9 Spirit of 海角大神: PERSEVERANCE. Congratulations to all students recognised in the assembly, and thanks to the staff who honoured them and the parents of the Top Ten students who were able to attend.

The role we can all have in supporting our students through their schooling

As I reflect on the growth and development of children into adulthood, I can鈥檛 help but conclude that we live in times in which aspiring for perfection can negate the beauty that each imperfection we have as humans truly holds for each person. I base this view on the fact that young people (and us adults) are more and more placed under the microscope, with an obsession by society to identify what is not working or what sets us back, rather than celebrate the authenticity that our imperfections give us. Our society is forever labelling people, partitioning individuals and grouping them into subgroups based on similar characteristics or circumstances, often following a diagnosis of the person鈥檚 mental health and wellbeing when the person does not meet the challenges they encountered. I am in no way suggesting that diagnoses are not important, as they provide us with support and guidance when assisting young people, however, understanding the person as an individual and embracing their authenticity must always drive our support for the person. This is supported in current research in the field of , with this blog article giving further references and insights.

Avoiding negative labelling of teenagers, when the identification of the label is based on their actions and mental health, can negatively impact their development and self-esteem. Instead of focusing on negative behaviours, we should emphasise an understanding of the person as a dignified child of God, addressing the underlying issues that may lead the person into meeting challenges with their development. Using language that separates the individual from their actions, such as stating, "this behaviour is problematic," rather than, "you are a troublemaker", will often lead to very different outcomes. Showing empathy and validating the feelings of the person, whilst recognising that behaviours often stem from stressors, anxiety, or other mental health challenges, will always lead to an authentic engagement with the young person. At 海角大神, we aim to encourage positive reinforcement by acknowledging the efforts and improvements, no matter how big or small, fostering an open and non-judgmental environment where our students feel safe to express themselves without fear of being labelled. This is achieved through the Restorative Practices, in processes that allow the experiences of the students (and adults) to be learning opportunities with positive outcomes. Collaborating with mental health professionals to provide appropriate support and interventions, when children find difficulties is a great strategy, but be aware that the labelling epidemic may be the reason why young people may struggle to adjust because knowing how a person may behave and why, alone, is not addressing their needs. The greatest impact is on the capacity of the diagnosis to inform best practice rather than justify the challenges. By focusing on their strengths and potential rather than their identified conditions, mistakes or struggles, in partnership, we can help young people build the resilience, self-worth, and the positive identity they deserve.

As parents, instilling a growth mindset in teenagers is crucial when addressing the challenges they face. This involves encouraging them to see challenges as opportunities for learning and growth rather than as threats to their self-worth. Praising the efforts of the person, their perseverance, and strategies for growth, rather than their innate abilities, which helps them understand that intelligence and talents can be developed through dedication and hard work, is paramount to their growth as positive thinkers. Encourage your child to embrace their mistakes and failures as part of the learning process, emphasising that setbacks provide valuable lessons in life. Role modelling these behaviours and providing examples of successful individuals who achieved their goals through persistence and continuous learning is also helping. As educators, we foster environments where curiosity is encouraged, and new skills and subjects are explored without fear of judgement. However, it is crucial that discussions about this take place at home. Teaching our students to set realistic, achievable goals, and to reflect on their progress regularly, needs to be done in partnership between the school and home. By modelling a growth mindset ourselves, demonstrating resilience, and showing enthusiasm for learning and self-improvement, we can inspire our students to adopt the same mindset, helping them to develop resilience and a lifelong love of learning.

As the subject selection period begins for many of our students, and momentum towards a successful Semester 2 takes place, developing emotional intelligence through the recognition, understanding, and managing of one's own emotions, as well as empathising with others, will lead to better outcomes. Encourage open conversations at home about feelings, the importance of validating emotions, and of demonstrating that all feelings are a normal part of life. Healthy emotional regulation strategies, such as taking deep breaths, practising mindfulness, or finding constructive outlets for frustration can assist you during stressful times. At the College, we encourage self-reflection by asking our students to set goals and monitor their progress. Promote problem-solving skills by guiding your child through confusion, challenges, frustrations, and conflicts to help them understand how such difficulties may be good platforms for learning. By creating a supportive environment where emotions are acknowledged and respected, we can all help the students develop the emotional intelligence they need to navigate relationships and challenges, find opportunities for growth and be positive and aspiring students, not labelled by their identified differences but rather celebrated by their uniqueness and commitment to make the most from their learning experiences throughout their lives.

Spiritually Speaking - With Faith, Hope and Love.

This week has been pretty powerful for me in the area of my faith - maybe some of you can relate to my story.

My son last Friday was in an accident where the metal roof of the truck in front of him peeled off like a can opener and flew at him, crashing into his windscreen. He was then rear ended when the car behind鈥檚 vision was blocked by the roof. Somehow he walked away and even he, a self proclaimed agnostic, realised that someone was watching over him, some higher power. This naturally led me to say that while he may not choose to name that power be it God, Yahweh, or Allah - that power is one and the same.

Then yesterday I was at the Faith and Mission Leadership conference and we had Sr Rita Malavisi talking about different ways to experience prayer. One of these was using signpost cards. Where you select a card and turn it over and read what the word or message says. She swears that God is never wrong and you will pick the card most relevant to you. I went and deliberately chose one in an unusual place on the table and turned it over. Mine said 鈥渓ooking鈥� "Looking for signposts鈥�. I was blown away as in the past few years I have had several significant challenges in my own life and I have been looking for signs, for meaning.

This leads me to today, our Yr 12 students had Michelle Newland as a guest speaker and she speaks on her journey of having a severe asthma attack, died for 10 minutes and the resulting brain injury this caused. It is a story of determination and perseverance, but more importantly of faith, hope and love. Without her faith, she and her family would not have had hope and the love of her family and friends is what helped her achieve far more than the specialists ever said would be possible.

At the conference there was another section about Mary - where she was told by the angel that she would become pregnant with Jesus. She had two choices; to accept or deny. Michelle said the same thing about herself and her family. As I write this I look back on everything this week, all the good fortune, the love, the signs and now I have a choice - do I accept the signs or deny?

For those of you who may also be experiencing challenges - no matter how big or small. I pray that you too can look for the signs of faith, hope and love and have the courage to accept.

Social Justice - Term 3

Our Social Justice project this term is the Fair Trade Fair, a week-long event we will hold in Week 9 (September 9-13). More details will be shared with you in the coming weeks, so please keep an eye out for information on SIMON notices.

In preparation for the fair, we would appreciate your help. If you have any clothes you no longer wear or books you no longer need, we would be grateful for your donations to our second-hand stall. Items can be dropped off at the Catholic Life Office, located next door to IT Support.

National schools Tree Planting Day 

海角大神 College has celebrated its dedicated to Schools Tree Day on Thursday 1st August. Each year, thousands of schools participate nationwide in environmental activities that educate individuals about the world around them. Students from across the school volunteered to participate in tree planting at the Indigenous Garden. Students planted trees, ground covers, grasses and shrubs and look forward to seeing the grow.

We welcome you back to a new semester and a fresh start, with the opportunity to undertake new subjects, challenges and experiences. It has been a cold start to the term, making it difficult to maintain focus and motivation. However, we can be inspired by the Olympic athletes currently competing, who have demonstrated incredible discipline and determination to work towards their goals.

Bringing this into the perspective of 海角大神, we can also reflect these attributes through our personal goals. We all have the potential to strive for excellence, and like the athletes, by putting in the time and effort, we can achieve them. Large scale goals may seem impossible or out of reach, but it is important to remember that many small steps can take you further than a few large ones. By setting and achieving several short-term goals, it can boost your enthusiasm to continue onto the next, eventually hitting your main target that initially seemed too difficult. For example, winning a gold medal seems like a huge feat, but by dividing the task into manageable stages, it becomes possible. Similarly, aiming for 100% on a test could be tackled by reaching goals of completing class notes, working on cycle planners, and then moving onto practice tests, which can set you up in a good position to get there.

In saying this, goals aren鈥檛 always going to be met all of the time, and they are not always easy. But it is in the way that we continue to work towards them, despite the setbacks, that builds character and qualities like those seen in Olympians. We encourage you to reflect on the past semester, and gain an understanding of how you will continue to progress through this second semester.

On the 16th of July, the 海角大神 Music Department headed off to Phillip Island for the annual Music Camp. The weekend was filled with rehearsals and activities for all of our core ensembles students. The highlight to many of the students was the opportunity to collaborate and prepare the combined music item which included joining together all 150 students from Bands, Guitar Ensembles, and Choirs. This year the combined item will again feature at the College's Showcase Music Concert, which will take place in early September at the Mahon Theatre. Tickets will be on sale mid-August for families and friends.

There has also been a new addition to the Junior Music corridor, with our new honour board for Music Captains. There is now a display which includes the names of our Senior and Junior Music Captains, highlighting the amazing student leaders in Music since the program started back in 2018.

Lastly, students were also notified at Music Camp of my departure from the College this week. It has been a pleasure leading the Music Department for the past seven years, and I wish all the students the best in their future studies and performances.

Algorithmic Thinking at 海角大神

At 海角大神, we are embracing the new Victorian Maths Curriculum. Maths never changes, right?
Well, not quite!

One of the exciting developments is the introduction of algorithmic thinking for every student who is
studying Maths. Algorithmic thinking is thinking like a computer 鈥� next time you Google how to fix
something and you see a set of instructions, that鈥檚 an algorithm!

For the students this means combining their skills in using technology with logical thinking. In lessons
this includes developing students鈥� expertise in understanding and creating flowcharts, writing
instructions on how to solve a problem and, in Senior Years, writing basic programs for a CAS
calculator.

There are a range of ways that students at 海角大神 in all year levels are developing their skills. This
week, some of our Year 7s have been learning how to follow a flowchart to classify shapes. For
instance, they have been working out if a rhombus is classified as a square. And is a rectangle a
parallelogram?

In Year 11 Methods, students were looking at CAS programs to simulate throwing dice and learning
how to modify the code to count how many even numbers came up when rolling a dice multiple
times.

Algorithmic thinking is becoming increasingly vital in the workplace and we believe that it is an
important cross curricular skill for all students at 海角大神 to learn and in which to improve their
proficiency.

Futures Week was an opportunity for Year 10 students to engage in activities to support their wellbeing and future pathways. This included presentations from the Pat Cronin Foundation on the 鈥楥owards Punch,鈥� Respectful Relationships and different excursions to The Melbourne Museum on road safety and various tertiary excursions. We鈥檙e also very thankful for those in our community that volunteered their time to speak about their career journey to our Year 10s. It鈥檚 always a highlight of the week for students.

Year 10 Level Leader

On the last day of term 2, the year 10 students were given the opportunity to attend a tertiary institution of their choosing. Most people in my year level chose to attend a university and on Friday we all set out for Deakin Uni鈥檚 Burwood campus.

As we had to make our own way there, travelling to and from was slightly chaotic, but everyone managed to get there eventually. We all sat together for a presentation about Deakin University and why they were such a good uni. We then split up into groups and were taken around the entire campus on tour by two amazing College Ambassadors. It was great to hear about the uni from the perspective of students studying there and it was really inspiring to see how the ambassadors lit up when talking about their passions and what they were studying. We were also given the opportunity to listen to two lectures about engineering and psychology given by professional lecturers.
Overall, the Deakin University Excursion was a great experience as we were able to see firsthand what going to a uni would look like.

 Student reflections

This week was very fun and enjoyable. We all faced many challenges and triumphs. Each day we went to a different location in regional Victoria. The sights were amazing and the experiences will stay with us forever. It was a great way to take a break from school work and enjoy spending time with our friends. St Kilda, Toorak, Carlton, Marysville and Docklands. Each place offered exciting adventures. Overall, this week was filled with fun activities and things to do.

This week was truly amazing! We had the opportunity to explore the outer Melbourne CBD and visited the picturesque town of Marysville. Our days were filled with wonderful hikes and trails, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the surroundings. We also made sure to take in the sights and experiences of various locations, including Toorak, St Kilda, Carlton, and Docklands. Each area offered its own unique charm and delights, making our trip both diverse and memorable.

My Vic has been a great experience. I found it very fun as we got to go around the city and discover different parts of Melbourne. St Kilda was my favourite throughout the week as it was a peaceful and clean suburb. As Dominic, we also went to Marysville and hiked up the waterfall. Although it was cold and wet we made lots of memories out of the experience. My Vic has been very fun and taught us a lot, including how to catch public transport and problem-solving skills. Overall This week has been very enjoyable and a big highlight of year 9.

Year 9 MacKillop - My Melbourne 

During My Melbourne, all Year 9 classes from Mackillop had a fantastic opportunity to explore the city and experience it's diverse cultures. We began our journey at Cook's Cottage, where we were fascinated by the rich history and the stories that surrounded it. Next, we visited the Eureka Skydeck, which offered breathtaking views of the city skyline, making for some great memories with friends and fantastic photos. The visit to the Magistrates Court was particularly insightful, giving us a glimpse into the workings of the legal system in a way that felt both relevant and important.

We also enjoyed wandering through various museums, where we immersed ourselves in art and history. Each exhibit was thought-provoking and sparked interesting conversations among us. One of our highlights was navigating the city with our friends; at the start it was hard to figure out the best routes, but the further we travelled, the easier it got. Navigating Melbourne with no adults has given us a newfound sense of independence, allowing us to explore the city's vibrant neighbourhoods at our own pace and discover hidden gems that we might have missed in a guided tour. Overall, My Melbourne was a memorable experience that not only deepened our appreciation for the city but also offered us a sense of autonomy and confidence.

Year 9 Rice - Starts with Me!

The Spirit of 海角大神 value for Year 8 is Stewardship. With this in mind, Year 8s spent Activities Week exploring particular issues that certain regions from around the world face. They were tasked with using science, engineering, technology and maths (STEM) to attempt to solve these problems.

Students got to participate in an excursion or incursions to help them learn about the problem that they were tasked with fixing e.g. housing in the earthquake-prone region of Nepal. Students also participated in the very chaotic but fun World Trade Game which served to teach students about the unfair reality of resource distribution around the world and what people, rich or poor, might do in order to get what they want.

Winners from each of the six country groups will apply to Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) to enter their Melbourne STEM Make A Difference showcase happening in September.

As the Global Green coordinator, I'd like to thank all of the staff at 海角大神 who made Global Green possible and thank the students who gave everything to the program. I hope that everyone took something meaningful away from the experience.

St Thomas 海角大神 OP was known primarily as a brilliant theologian and philosopher. He is the patron saint of universities and scholars. It is with his example that we strive to provide a faith learning environment for all our learners to reflect on their intellect, faith, ethics and religious tradition.

Middle School

The Religion Learning Area provides a course for all students in the Middle School. This semester, students investigate the following topics to support their knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith.

• Year 7

       We investigate the giants of the Hebrew Scriptures such as Abraham, Jacob, Esau and Joseph. We then               study Advent and Christmas through the liturgical calendar and practices of these seasons.

• Year 8
  
  We investigate the life, ministry and times of Mary, Jesus and the early Christian communities using history and scripture as our focus.

• Year 9
  
  We study historic and modern day prophets before moving onto the themes of healing, reconciliation and forgiveness. The prophets challenged society to live a good and just life through God鈥檚 Law of Love. These are reflected in the way the Catholic Tradition celebrates God鈥檚 forgiveness and ritual to repair broken relationships.

• 10 RE Philosophy - Introduced in 2023!
  
  Quite literally, the term "philosophy" means, "love of wisdom." Philosophy is an activity people undertake when they seek to understand fundamental truths about themselves, the world in which they live, and their relationships to the world and to each other. We are able to use our God given gift of intellect to more fully understand ourselves and our world using logic and reason

• Yr 10 and 11 EDGE (by application)
  
  EDGE aims to develop theological knowledge and Christian ministry skills. Students will engage in their own personal faith formation as they plan, contribute, and develop college liturgies. They will develop skills to guide other students during the year, with opportunities to plan and deliver an RE lesson to Middle School students. They will have involvement in social justice initiatives.

• Yr 10 and 11 RE Music - New in 2024! (by application)
  
  Why does the Devil have all the good music? Or does he? We tend to think not. The inaugural classes of Year 10 and 11 RE Music have undertaken individual research projects and presented their learning about the many and varied ways that music can help us connect with God. Students chose music ranging wide from Mozart鈥檚 Requiem to Black Sabbath After Forever, to contemporary pop, rock and metal, and explored how music of any style can express and nurture faith. Classes also covered choosing music for liturgy and the role of music minister. Our practical classes focused on working together as an ensemble and learning and playing music for school liturgies. Year 10 classes finished strong by performing their own choice item: Bon Jovi鈥檚 Keep the Faith. Amen to that!

• Yr 11 RE Art - New in 2025!
  
  Religious Education Art is predominantly theory based in the tradition of the Church supporting expression through art. We will explore a range of art mediums including: 2D, 3D, media and film and how they express the artists faith and their interpretation of scripture. Students will analyse and interpret symbolism, compare and contrast scripture to the artist鈥檚 creation, explore art as a form of prayer and express your own faith through art.

• VCE Religion & Society Unit 1 (Year 10) & Unit 2 (Year 11)
  
  Over two years, we explore the origins of religion and understand its role in the development of society, identifying the nature and purpose of religion. We investigate religion over time and acknowledge it鈥檚 contribution to the development of human society. We focus on how religion shapes personal and group identity, with a detailed study of Ethics in Year 11.

• VCE Text & Traditions Unit 1 (Year 10) & Unit 2 (Year 11)
  
  Over two years, we examine the place of sacred texts and their literary forms within our religious tradition. Students explore the importance of sacred texts as the source of a tradition and learn how to interpret and describe their meaning for the earlier and continuing tradition.

  Our VCE 3-4 options allow students to study their religious tradition and add to their VCE certificate. We investigate the structure of religion, through its interaction with society (R&S) or the study of scripture (T&T). It is a great way to see how our faith story crosses paths with literature, history (such as the rise and fall of empires and the Protestant Reformation) and the plight of refugees in our country.
• Yr 12 RE Seminar

       The College provides an RE seminar programme oriented toward a faith filled life after 海角大神. College             staff and guest presenters provide opportunities for students to consider what comes next.

On the Morning of Thursday 25th July, eager students from Year 9 and 10 gathered for an inspiring industry morning dedicated to exploring the diverse career pathways available through VCE Food Studies and VET VCE Cookery. Selected by their teachers for their keen interest in culinary arts and food sciences, these students were treated to a series of engaging presentations and hands-on workshops. Industry professionals including chefs, a nutritionist, and food technologists, shared their journeys and insights, highlighting the vast opportunities within the food industry. The event aimed to spark curiosity and passion, providing students with a clearer understanding of the skills and knowledge they could acquire through these specialised programs.

Throughout the morning, students participated in interactive sessions that showcased the practical applications of food studies and cookery. They learned about the intricate processes behind food packaging, the importance of nutrition and food safety, and the creative aspects of culinary arts. The event concluded with brunch provided by Julie McConchie and her team in Cafe N9ne.

鈥淎 guest speaker shared her journey of relocating to Melbourne, detailing her career experiences and various of jobs she has had. We also learned about the VETready classes and their purpose during the informative session. The morning was great fun, and I was intrigued by the potential opportunities for the upcoming year.鈥�  -Zali Beasley

On Friday the 26th of July the Year 9 French Students had the opportunity to travel to the City and visit the National Gallery of Victoria. At the Gallery we were lucky enough to be given a tour through multiple different artworks during the Impressionism period of art in the 19th Century. It was amazing to see all the artworks and the differences between artists. It was also amazing to see certain artworks that we had been looking at in class in person. One of the best parts was finding out more about this time period and what inspired the different artists including Pablo Picasso, Camille Pissarro and others. Another highlight of the trip was our tour of the gallery. We saw so many amazing pieces of art and the tourguide was so friendly. Merci beaucoup to the staff at the NGV, Mme Scott and Mme Aluthge!

Last week, all of the year nine french students went on an excursion into the city to visit the National Art Gallery, followed by lunch at a french restaurant called 鈥淟e Petit Chateau鈥�. We had the opportunity to try two different french dishes, which we all very much enjoyed! We were able to use our time at the cafe to practice our French with the work from the restaurant, which was both fun and beneficial to our learning. This was a great opportunity for french students, and a very fun day out

Last week, our Year 9 French students visited the National Gallery of Victoria as part of their study of French art. This excursion greatly enhanced their understanding of Impressionist art and improved their French language skills. Guided by an art expert, the students engaged in discussions and analysis of the artworks, gaining deeper insights into the cultural and historical contexts of the Impressionist movement.

A highlight was lunch at a local creperie, where the students conversed in French with the chef. This real-world language practice boosted their confidence and competence in spoken French. Overall, the excursion provided an enriching blend of cultural education and practical language use, creating a holistic and enjoyable learning experience.

Disney Channel's smash hit movie musical comes to life on your stage!

On Monday the 29th the career expo was held for senior students to gain an understanding and insight to possible pathways after high school. There was a range from Tafe to universities present for all students such as ACU, Box Hill institute, ADF, Australian Police Force and Deakin. We were able to ask questions and receive additional information such as what ATAR's and prerequisites are required for our future careers and any other queries we had. This was very beneficial especially for the year 12's as we are coming towards open days and VTAC applications. Thank you to the careers councillors for providing this opportunity for us to receive more closure and security in our future decisions within our own school.
