We are now less than a fortnight from Holy Thursday, the very first Eucharist at which our Lord commissioned the apostles to replicate the meal both to emphasise community and to remember Jesus鈥檚 sacrifice: Do this in memory of me.

I have been blessed this past fortnight to share meals with different members of our community in very different settings, each a celebration of the life we are gifted by God. 

* It has been delightful to witness the enthusiasm of our newest community members before, during and after dinner at the Year 7 Dominic & MacKillop camps (one of which including a rousing Happy Birthday to a Year 7 camper).

* At the MACS International Women鈥檚 Day breakfast, I accompanied Curriculum Coordinator Pam Ryan and Head of Senior Years Rachel Crawley, celebrating female leaders in Catholic education


* Year 11 student leaders celebrated International Women鈥檚 Day by inviting Middle Years female student leaders, female staff leaders and the College Leadership Team to share in morning tea for International Women's Day. They spoke passionately about the importance of lifting each other up by being inclusive, proud of each other and celebrating each other鈥檚 success.

 *  Last Sunday, I was welcomed in the Eucharistic celebration at St John鈥檚 parish, Mitcham, to join Fr Dispin John and the community, connecting with some current and future 海角大神 families


In memoriam

We join the Caroline Chisholm Catholic College community in mourning the passing of Principal Rob Brennan this weekend. We ask that you keep his family, friends and the CCCC community in your prayers, as he is commended to God鈥檚 trust.

Belonging & Perseverance: EISM Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to the many students who represented 海角大神 at this week鈥檚 EISM Division 1 Swimming Carnival, and thanks to the staff who have supported them both on the day and through many early morning training sessions.

Catholic Education Week

Today marks the conclusion of Catholic education Week, with Mass at St Patrick鈥檚 Cathedral. This was followed by a concert in Fitzroy gardens for Catholic primary students, at which our 海角大神 musicians provided entertainment. Our Year 10 EDGE students also attended a symposium exploring Catholic theology and practice.

Parent-Teacher interviews

Parent-teacher interviews provide a great opportunity to discuss your child鈥檚 progress and work with their teachers for areas to build upon for the remainder of the semester. Details of the interviews occurring in the first two weeks of Term 2 are provided in the Learning at 海角大神 section below.

Open Day

This Sunday 17 March we will hold our Open Day from 12.00 - 3.00pm. We look forward to showcasing the College and welcoming both prospective families and any current families wishing to tour the campus with our student guides and/or speak with staff. Parent Student Teacher Interviews concerning student progress in Term 1 will be held online and are scheduled for Monday 15 April, from 1pm-8pm (First day of term and student free day) and Friday 26 April, 8:20am-3:20pm (student free day following Anzac Day holiday).

The Professional Learning Day that would normally be conducted on the first day of term has been deferred to Term 3 to allow for these meetings and more class time.

Interviews can be booked through the Parent Access Module and bookings will open after 6pm on Monday 25 March to allow wider parent access.

Bookings are made through the Parent Access Module (PAM) using the username and password you have already been issued.

These Parent Teacher interviews will occur by video conferencing using Google Meet.
All details are explained in the Parent Teacher Module in PAM. The process for booking interviews remains the same - that is, to log onto PAM and book through there.

Senior Years Report

Whole School Leadership Summit. 

Last Thursday, 7 March, the College Leaders: Connor Haughie, Isobel Mugamu, Bella Schneiders and Lucas Mandaliti delivered their first Whole School Leadership Summit. Outlining their objectives for the student leadership group: to develop the leadership behaviours of student leaders across the school. The session focused on developing skills to be a good leader, including: goal setting, communication, and collaboration skills.

This was a practical and reflective session in which the students had the opportunity to work in mixed-year-level groups, identify leadership skills exhibited in activities, and evaluate the importance they play in leadership. This first session builds the basis for future meetings, which will focus on areas of change or improvement in the school.

International Women鈥檚 Day, Friday 8 March. 

Yr 11 student leaders, Evie Evans, Gabby Linton and Maeve Wilkinson initiated events and celebrated International Women鈥檚 Day by inviting Middle Years student leaders to a recess event. The message they shared with their peers was the importance of supporting one another. To lift each other up, by being inclusive, proud of each other and celebrating each other鈥檚 success. The dynamic leaders produced informative lesson activities delivered during Year 10 and 11 THRIVE lessons.

Both of these events were initiated, created and executed by the student leaders. A true example of the OECD鈥檚 definition of student agency: a sense of responsibility as students participate in society and aim to influence people, events and circumstances for the better. Agency requires the ability to frame a guiding purpose and identify actions to achieve a goal.

Looking ahead to next week's Harmony Day, Friday 22nd March, one of the day's goals is for students to see the world from multiple perspectives. To celebrate and engage in Harmony Day, Senior Year students will be invited to see the world and our city through the eyes of different people. Each year level will attend a presentation by a variety of speakers based on their year level鈥檚 themes and core values. The day concludes with the whole school Colour Run and fundraising activities.

Students have had introductory activities and discussions related to the day throughout their THRIVE periods. In the spirit of everyone belonging we strongly encourage all students to participate in their presentations and the afternoon activities.

Middle Years Report

As we settle back into our routines after 2 weeks of Year 7 Camp, I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude to all the Year 7 Students and Staff members who took part in the planning and involvement of the 3 camps at ADANAC and for contributing in making the camps such a memorable and enriching experiences. Staff are continually confronted by challenging decisions and camps are a 24/7 experience for them.

Our camps are all aimed at supporting the holistic growth of students in terms of their social skills, independence, teamwork, leadership skills, emotional resilience, memories, friendships, and more and I can鈥檛 thank our dedicated staff enough for the platform they provide for this to occur.

Like any activities that our students have at their disposal, they have the option of seizing opportunities or letting them slip by and the feedback from the camps were that our students were 鈥檃ll-in鈥� and to top it off were extremely respectful and well-behaved to go with it. All of the students helping to add to a great positive culture that we hope to continually build over the coming years.

The photos that you see reflect the enthusiasm, resilience, and positive attitudes on display throughout the camp from staff and students. Their willingness to step out of their comfort zones, embrace new challenges, and support one another, gave others permission to do likewise and we hope this is something that grows and grows over their next 6 years together.

HARMONY DAY is Friday March 22nd

Harmony Day is a day to celebrate the cultural diversity of our community. Across the day, students are involved in various activities, performances, and hear from inspiring guest speakers. They will finish the day with a whole-school Colour Run Carnival for Caritas.

Timetable for the day:

Middle Years students have Homeroom at 9.00am, and then activities Period 2 to 5.


Senior Years students have normal timetabled classes Period 1 to 5. One period will be a guest speaker.


Whole school: Period 6&7 will be a Colour Run Carnival for Caritas on the ovals.


                   *All students are required to attend the afternoon, and they are invited to                           participate in the Colour Run.


                   * Attendance will be marked at the start of Period 6 as normal.


Colour Run Carnival for Caritas - Period 6&7

Information about the Colour Run has been provided to students in Homeroom/Mentor this week. We encourage all students to get involved in the afternoon activities to help us celebrate as a whole community.

Tickets and permission:

                  * The entry fee for the Colour Run is $5, with proceeds being donated to                             Caritas Australia.


                  * Students can purchase a ticket at this TryBooking link until Sunday                            17th March.


                  * Parents and guardians need to please complete the Permission Form on                          PAM by Sunday 17th March.


What to bring:

                   * Students participating in the Colour Run will need to bring a white t-shirt                          and shorts/pants to cover their PE uniform for the run. They can wear a                            black t-shirt underneath their polo shirt, so they can remove their polo                              shirt for the run if they wish.


                    * Students should bring a bag to put these clothes in after the run.                                       Students must remove these items before leaving school and wear their                           normal full PE uniform home.


                    * Students with asthma need to bring their asthma puffer. Several First Aid                           stations will be around the course also to assist.


We are looking forward to celebrating Harmony Day with the whole College community.

Over the last two weeks our Year 7's have been away on school camp- a wonderful way for them to get to know each other and form lasting friendships and a sense of belonging with their classmates and teachers. Well done to all the year 7 students for participating with such enthusiasm and joy, as can be seen in all the photos! A big thanks to all the teachers for making this a memorable time away.  

MacKillop Year 7  Reflections

Mabel Van Marle - Year 7 Navy

A couple of weeks ago, Year 7 Mackillop went to camp Adanac in Yarra Junction. It was such an awesome experience, with such awesome activities. My three personal favourites were soft arrow archery, the waterslide and the flying fox. A great experience about camp was how many new connections I made, from people within my class and out of it. The food was great, and I especially enjoyed the continental breakfasts, where you could choose from a varied amount of food. Overall it was an awesome camp and everyone had a great time.



Lucy Small - Year 7 Navy

Camp Adanac was such a fun camp. Some of my favourite activities were the Water slide and the tread wall. The food was amazing!!! For dinner the first night we had chicken parmies and the second night we had a nacho bowl. I definitely went back for seconds. Some things that I learnt at camp was how to manage time because we only had 15 minutes to get ready for most activities. But overall I had lots of fun and would recommend it to anyone.

The Camp was absolutely amazing and the group leaders were so nice. I loved the trampolines because I am able to flip all I want. The Camp made me bond with many other people and overall it was an amazing experience.

I enjoyed lots of things like Ga Ga Ball, waterslide and the bus rides. I enjoyed the waterslide and the flying fox the most because they had the most action.

I enjoyed archery, and the flying fox the most though all the activities were quite fun. Overall the camp was amazing, the camp staff and group leaders were very considerate and kind, the food and activities were awesome.

I enjoyed activities like the zipline, tread wall and archery but I also enjoyed getting to spend time with my friends.

On Tuesday, the 海角大神 swim team, which had been training since the start of term, competed in the Division 1 EISM carnival at MSAC. This was the first time in a very long time the carnival was held during the day and also in the inside pool at MSAC.

We had, unfortunately, a few swimmers unable to swim for a variety of reasons and this made it hard to match our previous results from the past few years of 3rd. We were competitive throughout the carnival and finished a credible 5th.

A huge thank you to the swimmers who swam up out of their age group so we were able to have competitors in every event - Joe Vardy, Amelia Watson, Gabby Hooper, Kiah Singh, Lily Peace.

For our Yr 12 swimmers this was their final swim for 海角大神, a huge thank you to their involvement with the 海角大神 swim program over the past 6 years- Will Clemow, Connor Haughie, Tom Vardy and congratulations to our Swim Captains for 2024, Chloe Chambers and Sam Guerin.

Experiential learning in Health and Physical Education to develop movement competence and confidence

Health and Physical Education focuses explicitly on developing movement skills and concepts students require to participate in physical activities with competence and confidence. The knowledge, understanding, skills and dispositions students develop through movement in Health and Physical Education encourage ongoing participation across their lifespan and in turn lead to positive health outcomes. Movement competence and confidence is seen as an important personal, social and community asset to be developed, refined and valued.

At 海角大神 an integral part of developing movement competence and confidence is to provide students with varied opportunities and experiences to learn in, through and about movement.

So far already this term students across Years 7-12 have participated in the following broad range of practical activities and experiences:

Feedback from Ringwood Croquet Club Member:

鈥淛ust a short note to compliment the Year 9 students who came to our club today to learn how to play the gentle (and not so gentle) game of croquet. It was a delightful experience to have them here and it didn't take them long to realise what a strategic game it is, as well as how vicious it can be. The rivalry between them was good natured at all times. They are all a credit to your school.I would personally like to thank a couple of the boys on my court. Unfortunately I don't know their names but they will know who they are. After they had taken their mallets to the upper level for storage, they returned to the lower court to help me pack away the equipment. Much appreciated boys, and thank you again.鈥�

Disability Sport and Recreation Victoria: WheelTalk program

Presented by Victorians with disability who are actively involved in sport and recreation, WheelTalk combines unique stories of lived disability with the opportunity to play Wheelchair Basketball or AFL.

Student reflections:

鈥淭he key message I took away from listening to Peter was to wake up each morning and the first thing to do is appreciate yourself. I enjoyed the wheelchair experience for both sports (basketball/footy) as it really put into perspective how hard they work on the court/ field (Upper body strength) and was very challenging but a lot of fun at the same time.鈥�

鈥淧eter talked about how he changed his mindset to minimise the barriers he had around him. He talked about his motivations and his struggles as a child to transport himself to and from school in his home country Nigeria. Playing wheelchair basketball gave me a newfound respect for the strength and endurance they have to play such an intense game. The experience related to current topics on barriers and enablers towards physical activity participation. Peter talked about how the lack of resources and infrastructure in his home country contributed as a barrier and the financial barriers he faced when migrating to Australia with both medical bills and the cost of things such as a specialised wheelchairs鈥�

鈥淭he key message I took away from the talk from Peter was to follow your dreams and no matter what adversity you come across you can always find a way to persevere. I enjoyed the wheelchair sports, it was something different that I had never done before and would do again. The experience I had was very humbling and I very much appreciated Peter and what he's achieved throughout his life (representative basketball, footy and powerlifting)鈥�

The Year 10 Geography class went on an excursion that took place at four sites around Port Phillip Bay.

Here is a student reflection by Addison Miller.

This week the Year 10 Geography class had the opportunity to extend our learning beyond the classroom and into the real world. As a class we were tasked with exploring four beach sites and investigating community approaches to land management and conservation strategies for these sites. We set off bright and early to our first destination, Ricketts Point, where we completed a vegetation transect, noting down all the native flora and fauna across the beach. We explored the nearby rock pools where we were able to discover all the little critters hiding, which we recorded in a field sketch. 

Our next stop was Red bluff lookout, one of my favourite locations we visited. In between collecting sea glass and shells, we used an inclinometer to measure the angels of the famous cliffs there, where we encountered some of the clearest and most beautiful waters I鈥檝e ever seen.

We continued our journey north to Brighton Beach, which involved a quick pit stop to the all important Yo-Chi and lunch. Afterwards, we collected sand samples from the south and north sides of the beach, where we took them back to school and analysed what was in there and how much microplastic we found. Our very last stop was to St Kilda, where we mapped out the land management practices that the council had implemented in the area. Overall I am extremely grateful that we were able to have the opportunity to take the day to apply classroom learning outside in the world and see it first hand. And a huge thanks to Mr Watson and Mr O鈥橞rien, who were able to make this day possible for us.

The Luna park excursion was a great educational opportunity that provided our class with an engaging learning experience and gave us a chance to study physics based on real life scenarios. The clear favourite ride was the scenic railway; despite the long wait times it was definitely worth it. Going on each ride gave us a chance to further our understanding of circular motion and centripetal acceleration, helping us apply equations to practical questions we see in our SACs and exams.

Seeing other schools from Victoria with so many of our peers who share our interest in physics provided our class with a positive atmosphere throughout the day.

On Thursday 7th March, a Backyard Biodiversity seminar was held for an excited group of our year 9 students that are currently studying sustainability for their  Keeping Pace unit.

The Seminar was hosted by the group 鈥榃ild Action鈥�, who visited us on site, with a beautiful assortment of native animals to show to our students, including an Echidna, Blue tongue Lizard, Owl, Tawny frogmouth, Frog, Sugar Glider, Baby Wallaby, Carpet Python, Pigmy Possum, Turtle, Cockatoo, and a Monitor Lizard.

Discussions were held about the importance of preserving the animal鈥檚 local habitats and how we as a community can take action to continue to protect the animals and prevent harm.

The preservation of animal habitats is an important component of staying true to our Catholic Social Teaching Principle of caring for God鈥檚 creation.

Throughout the seminar students were highly engaged in the learning, asking plenty of
questions about the animals and their environments.

In addition, they of course also loved getting up close to the animals to pat or to hold them!

This week has seen an exciting development at the SAM construction site. The steel columns have been installed to start the beginning of the super structure development. The next exciting stage is the main frame construction to be started from the southern end of the site. Definitely keep your eyes on this area as it all starts to take shape!
